Egypt will host a G20 meeting in Cairo from 1-3 September, Ambassador Raji El-Etrebi, Egypt’s Presidential Representative to the G20 and Assistant Foreign Minister for Regional and International Economic Affairs, announced on Saturday. This will mark the first time the gathering has been held outside the group’s member states since its establishment in 1999. The G20, comprising the world’s largest economies, accounts for approximately 80% of global GDP and 75% of global trade.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said the Cairo meeting will be organized in coordination with South Africa, which holds the G20 presidency this year, with discussions focusing on the escalating challenge of global food security. A wide range of G20 member states are expected to attend, along with guest countries invited under South Africa’s presidency, as well as several international organizations and financial institutions.

According to El-Etrebi, the talks will review the outcomes of the G20 Working Group on Food Security and advance negotiations on a ministerial statement to be adopted at the upcoming ministerial meeting in South Africa on 19 September. That document will form part of the official record of the G20 Summit, scheduled for Johannesburg on 22 – 23 September. El-Etrebi said the Cairo meeting reflects Egypt’s growing role in international affairs and builds on its active participation as a guest country in G20 processes this year, for the third consecutive time and the fifth overall.

Egypt has previously taken part under the presidencies of China (2016), Japan (2019), India (2023), Brazil (2024), and now South Africa (2025). Hosting the event, he added, highlights recognition of Egypt’s regional weight and its efforts to ensure that the priorities of developing countries, particularly in Africa, are heard in multilateral forums.
