As part of its ongoing efforts to monitor and analyze international indicators and reports related to Egypt and its interests, the Cabinet’s Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC) has highlighted the World Giving Index, published annually by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). The index examines global attitudes and behaviors toward giving and charitable work, offering a comprehensive picture of generosity trends worldwide. It also serves as a valuable reference for governments, non-profit organizations, and researchers to compare charitable activity across countries.
The 2025 edition of the report introduced a new methodology, with data collected through online surveys conducted between January 6 and 31, 2025. More than 50,000 participants from 101 countries took part. According to the findings, the average person worldwide donated the equivalent of 1.04% of their income in 2024, whether directly to people in need, to charitable or religious organizations, or for religious purposes.
Africa ranked highest globally for generosity, both in the proportion of people who donated and in donation size relative to income. On average, Africans contributed 1.54% of their income, compared to just 0.64% in Europe. At the country level, Nigeria topped the global rankings, with citizens donating 2.83% of their income, followed by Egypt in second place with 2.45%. Ghana and China shared third place at 2.19%, while Kenya came fifth at 2.13%, and Uganda sixth at 2.04%. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and India tied for seventh place, each recording 1.92%.
In terms of trust, Egypt, Sierra Leone, and Qatar were among the countries where citizens viewed charities as the most important and reliable institutions, while Japan and Norway ranked lowest. Volunteering also featured prominently in the report. Globally, 26% of people volunteered in 2024, contributing an average of nine hours per year. Africans again led the way, averaging 14.5 hours per person, while Europeans volunteered the least, with just 6.5 hours on average. At the country level, Qatar ranked first worldwide in volunteering, with citizens averaging 27.5 hours per person in 2024, followed by Rwanda with 26.6 hours.
