Cairo: EgyPulse – News Desk

An Egyptian medical team has achieved a precise medical breakthrough, using 3D printing technology in an operation to remove a massive tumor from the lower jaw of a 16-year-old patient. The patient was in critical condition, suffering from a tumor mixed with a purulent bacterial infection that had eroded half of the lower jawbone on the left side. He arrived at Agouza Specialized Hospital in dire straits before the medical team successfully removed the tumor.

The Secretariat of Specialized Medical Centers, affiliated with Health Ministry, reported that the patient’s weight had dropped to just 40 kilograms as a result of abstaining from food for four months. He also suffered from lung clumps that made general anesthesia a very dangerous challenge. In spite of these challenges, the anesthesia team was able to maintain complete control of the patient’s condition for four consecutive hours during the surgery.

The Secretariat explained on its website that the surgical team successfully removed the tumor and half of the lower jaw, followed by reconstruction using 3D printing technology and the insertion of a prosthetic plate within the mouth. It added that this was accomplished without the need for any external facial incisions, representing a huge leap in this type of delicate surgery.

The Director General of Agouza Hospital, Ahmed Samir Fouda, hailed what he called an “epic medical achievement”, one that displayed the highest levels of precision and professionalism from the maxillofacial surgery and anesthesia teams.
