Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, on behalf of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, took part Monday in the high-level meeting marking the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, held at the UN General Assembly Hall in New York. Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN Osama Abdel Khalek also attended. UN General Assembly President Annelina Baerbock delivered an address highlighting the principles on which the UN was founded in the aftermath of World War II, emphasizing the aspiration for a world of peace.

She noted today’s mounting challenges, underscoring this session’s theme: “Together Better: 80 Years and Beyond for Peace, Development, and Human Rights.” UN Secretary-General António Guterres also spoke, recalling the UN’s founding purposes in promoting peace, security, and civilian protection. He warned that those principles are under threat, citing the situation in Gaza as an example, alongside the escalating challenges of climate change. Guterres stressed that such challenges will persist, requiring the same spirit of unity envisioned by the UN’s founding fathers.

Former leaders, including ex-presidents of Liberia and Norway, also addressed the meeting, underscoring the UN’s enduring values and the need to uphold them in confronting today’s crises. The gathering is one of the main events of the high-level segment of the UNGA’s 80th session. The commemoration drew broad participation from world leaders, government officials, and UN representatives, serving as a platform to reflect on the UN’s eight decades of work, assess needed reforms, and strengthen the organization’s capacity to address pressing global challenges, advance the Sustainable Development Goals, safeguard human rights, and reinforce global governance for present and future generations.
