Minister of Foreign Affairs Badr Abdelatty has underscored Egypt’s ongoing efforts to achieve stability and peace in Sudan as he discussed with his Sudanese counterpart the humanitarian and security escalation in El-Fasher city.
Sudan is facing a deepening humanitarian and security crisis after the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized control of Darfur’s El-Fasher city after an 18-month siege, forcing the Sudanese Armed Forces to withdraw.
Reports indicate that over 250,000 civilians remain trapped, with limited access to food, water, and medical care, and amid reports of mass killings and ethnically targeted violence. The RSF takeover marks a major shift in the conflict, giving the paramilitary group control over all state capitals in Darfur and raising concerns about further atrocities and forced displacement.
As he received Sudan’s Foreign Minister Mohieldin Salem on Wednesday, Abdelatty affirmed Egypt’s commitment to supporting the Sudanese people. The Egyptian foreign minister emphasized Cairo’s active engagement in efforts to secure a ceasefire and implement a comprehensive humanitarian truce, allowing aid access and alleviating civilian suffering.
He also reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, noting that the security and stability of Sudan are integral to regional security. Egypt has intensified its efforts to resolve the Sudanese crisis amid an ongoing war between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the RSF, which has killed tens of thousands of Sudanese people and displaced millions more since April 2023.
Cairo is engaged in a Quad mechanism alongside the United States, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia aimed at halting the war. The four countries agreed last week to establish a Joint Operational Committee to bolster coordination on urgent priorities during a meeting in Washington.
