Egypt participated in an informal technical meeting hosted by the UK-based Wilton Park foundation from October 13 – 15 to explore innovative financing mechanisms for Gaza’s reconstruction, following the extensive destruction and high costs resulting from the recent war in the enclave.
The Egyptian delegation was led by Assistant Foreign Minister and Director of the Palestine Department Mahmoud Omar. The meeting was jointly chaired by representatives from Egypt, the United Kingdom and Palestine, and brought together experts in finance, investment and the private sector, as well as officials from relevant ministries and technical bodies, according to a statement by the foreign ministry.
The gathering, which had been scheduled prior to the latest ceasefire agreement in Gaza, forms part of preparations for an international conference that Egypt is set to host in Cairo in the second half of November. The upcoming event will focus on early recovery, reconstruction and development in Gaza. Insights and technical outcomes from the Wilton Park meeting are expected to feed into discussions at the Cairo conference, particularly on the financing track.
Participants commended Egypt’s diplomatic efforts in brokering the Gaza ceasefire and expressed appreciation for its initiative in launching reconstruction efforts through the planned Cairo conference. Egypt is currently finalizing preparations for the international gathering, in close coordination with the United States and other regional and global partners, including donor countries, United Nations agencies, regional organizations, international financial institutions, the private sector, and civil society groups.
The effort is aligned with both the Arab-Islamic plan and the Trump peace initiative, and aims to build on momentum from the recent Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit and US President Donald Trump’s engagement. Organizers hope the initiative will consolidate the ceasefire in Gaza and lay the groundwork for a new phase of peace, stability and prosperity across the region.
