At 00:00 on Friday, clocks will be set back by one hour across Egypt, marking the conclusion of daylight-saving time, which has been in effect since April. Daylight-saving time was reintroduced in 2023 after a seven-year hiatus, as part of the government’s efforts to reduce electricity consumption.
While the Cabinet has maintained that the measure can save approximately 10% of energy, some studies, including a 2016 report cited by the House of Representatives, suggest that the impact on electricity savings is limited, besides disrupting individuals’ circadian rhythms.
Energy conservation helps the country reduce fuel imports, a significant concern for Egypt’s economy and foreign currency reserves amid ongoing regional and global challenges. To further conserve energy, the government implemented a load-shedding program in the summer of 2023, which concluded successfully a year later following the securement of necessary fuel supplies.
As clocks revert by one hour, individuals may experience a temporary adjustment period as their internal body clocks realign with social schedules. Meanwhile, your work routine and appointments will likely stick to their usual schedule. Most electronic devices, including laptops and mobile phones, are configured to adjust automatically, minimizing the need for manual intervention.
