Red Sea Coral Reefs show Promising Recovery in Egyptian Monitoring Programme

Moscow: EgyPulse – News Desk

Egypt’s annual coral reef monitoring programme in the Red Sea shows results, indicating a potential recovery of these vital marine ecosystems, as reported by Daily News Egypt, a partner of TV BRICS. The programme, spearheaded by a team of scientists from the Red Sea’s protected areas, aims to assess the health of coral reefs and track the effects of climate change.

Recent field surveys conducted across multiple sites have shown no signs of widespread coral bleaching or damage from elevated sea surface temperatures in 2025. This is a significant improvement compared to assessments carried out in 2023 and 2024, which revealed greater instances of coral stress.

Officials attribute this positive development to a shorter duration of high sea temperatures this year, reducing thermal stress on the vulnerable coral colonies. Furthermore, many coral formations that were previously affected by bleaching are now demonstrating signs of recovery, underscoring the reefs’ inherent resilience and adaptive capabilities in the face of environmental change.

As coral reefs globally remain among the ecosystems most susceptible to climate change, particularly the steady increase in ocean temperatures, consistent monitoring efforts like Egypt’s are crucial.
