The General Conference of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has endorsed the election of Dr. Khaled El-Anany as the new Director-General of UNESCO. This came following the elections held on Thursday, November 6, 2025, in Samarkand in Uzbekistan.
Dr. Khaled El-Anany’s assumption of the position of UNESCO Director-General is considered a historic achievement, being the first Egyptian, Arab, and African to hold this high post. It reflects Egypt’s distinguished status and its growing international and diplomatic influence under the leadership of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, at a crucial stage for the region and the world.
Dr. El-Anany’s endorsement received the support of 172 countries out of 175 member states participating in the General Conference, a clear indication of the great confidence and international esteem he enjoys, as well as his competence and broad vision for the future of the organization’s work, according to a statement from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday.
This achievement crowns a campaign that lasted more than two years, marked by tireless efforts, intense diplomatic activity, and the dedication of the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Egyptian missions abroad. It also reflects the significant support and guidance of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and the Egyptian and Arab peoples. This well-deserved victory is considered a new accomplishment that adds to Egypt’s record of successes and enhances its position on the international stage.
